Hey guys, I bombarded your twitter when listening, but thought I'd give a better comment with more than 140 chars at a time.
ReplyDeleteAs we previously talked about, PlayTime is a tough intro to the world of Tati. A lot of the visual gags and sound cues are established in the earlier films of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday and Mon Oncle. Plus the character is developed more in those films (albeit without hardly any dialog). You were spot on by talking about how he was contrasting modern vs tradition, and that was a theme prevelant in all of his movies. I especially liked your comments about how some of his experiences could be transplanted to today, such as people sitting around on their iPhones.
I can attest that this film gets better on additional viewings as you suggested. All of his do, but this one even more because it is so dense. Some of the gags are easy to miss and I was impressed you caught some like in the office cubicles. I remember the apartment scene with TV watching as being difficult the first time, but there's a TON going on there that you pick up on with additional viewings. And yes, the restaurant scene runs long, but it sort of cements the theme that they don't need all that fanciness to have a good time.
